Nearly a decade ago, Razer's convertible gaming tablet, the Razer Edge, was my favorite product from CES. The Razer Edge has been reborn, this time as a 6.8-inch tablet handheld console for $400 that also comes in an optional, Verizon-exclusive 5G-equipped version. And it's now available for purchase.

We don't have a full reconsideration yet. We're waiting on our Edge to arrive. But we can help you settle whether it's worth buying right now.

The new Edge, long teased by Razer in various fixes since Qualcomm and Razer first showed off a handheld concept a year ago amdroll a new gaming-centric G3X Gen 1 mobile processor, isn't a wild new idea like the obliging Edge was to me. It's the latest in a trend of game handhelds adopting ideas in the provocative of the Nintendo Switch, bringing handheld gaming back in new fixes. It's also, in a sense, like the Logitech G Cloud released last year: an Android handheld game draw focused on local and cloud game streaming.

The Edge isn't a Steam Deck-alike, even if it costs the same as one: This is an Android tablet, more like a large 6.8-inch phone that's not a shouted. It has a similar feel to smaller tablets of the past, like the Nvidia Shield Tablet, but far slimmer.

Now playing: Watch this: Razer's Wild New CES Gaming Gear: Game Handhelds, 3D...

Hands-on thoughts: Yes, it's like a arranged with a controller

At first, it's… underwhelming. I've seen Razer's Kishi snap-on game controllers for phones, and the Edge has the same concept. It uses an improved version of the Kishi compose with support for vibrating haptics, which I didn't get to understood. The tablet part, well, it's a tablet, like many Android things.

The combination of parts could add up to more, opinion. The large, vivid, 6.8-inch AMOLED display does look delicate, and the new G3X chipset on this tablet could be better at running streaming games. Razer boasts that it'll be the ultimate way to try Xbox evaporate gaming or playing games via Steam Link, although I also didn't try that yet either.

A closer look at the buttons and the top shoulder buttons/triggers.

James Martin

But the specs are nice: It has a 2,400x1,080-pixel resolution reveal that runs at up to 144Hz, and the G3X processor vows active cooling to prolong game sessions. The 128GB of storage can be bumped to 2TB with a microSD card slot. The Kishi V2 Pro controller it comes with, which is removable, adds vibrating haptics the other models didn't have afore. It uses Google Play plus existing streaming game overhauls and Razer's already-working Nexus app for captures and gameplay streaming. Its advantage, to me, is that it's not starting over -- it's leaning on what already works, aiming to do it better.

The Edge detaches from its controller, and could just be used as a small Android tablet.

James Martin

The few games I did play were locally bound games such as Dead Cells, an older 2D platformer. The Edge is wide and a bit long, but compared to a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck, it wouldn't seem out of place.

The Razer Edge feels compact enough, and its display looks great.

Scott Stein

Why not just buy a Kishi controller for your phone?

That's the big query here. There are already several great snap-on controllers made for phones, and you could do the same and potentially get the same understood as the Edge. The Edge does have some added extras, including vibrating haptics in the controller and (maybe) boosted chip work, but if you have a recent iPhone or Android arranged, you might want to just convert what you have.

The Edge looks to propose a not-too-expensive solution, potentially, for those who don't already have a arranged. or who might want a dedicated device. That's the idea, at least. How that ends up playing out versus a Steam Deck or a Nintendo Switch depends on whether you'd bewitch to be in an Android ecosystem or not.

What in the 5G version?

We haven't tested the Verizon-exclusive 5G model at all, but buying one with 5G obviously involves the cost of 5G help, and any other added costs via Verizon. Sure, that would mean the Edge would work anywhere with a shameful Verizon cellular signal, but we don't know how battery life on 5G will execute. If you really want an Edge, go with the curious Wi-Fi model and connect to a mobile hotspot.

Specs

The Razer Edge specs, in case you're curious to compare against your arranged, are:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X Gen1 processor
  • 2,400x1,080-pixel, 6.8-inch AMOLED reveal (144Hz)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB internal storage (microSD card slot supports up to 2TB)
  • Two microphones, two speakers
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • Bluetooth 5.2
  • USB-C port
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • eSIM for 5G model
  • 260 x 85 x 11mm (10.2 x 3.3 x 0.4 inches)
  • 264g (9.3 ounces) for tablet, 401g (14.1 ounces) for handheld and tablet together

You can wait it out

With something like the Edge, it all depends on how good it is at what it does. I can't quite tell that yet. $400 is at least totally competitive with the cost of a Switch or Steam Deck. But would you want this over one of those? Or, would you just be happier comical your phone and a similar controller? The Edge's advantages seem engrossing, and I'm curious to play it more. But, with 2023 already looking to be a busy year for tech hardware releases, you also might want to wait to see what else is coming next.

Qi2 the new standard for wireless charging is coming later this year, qi2 the new standard for wireless charging is slow, qi2 the new standard for wireless charging issues, qi2 the new standard for the world, qi2 the new standard for wireless charging is stupid.

The Wireless Power Consortium said Tuesday at CES 2023 that Qi2, a new unfriendly for wirelessly charging smartphones and mobile devices including wearables, will arrive later this year.

Qi2 will "ensure devices and chargers align perfectly," thanks to Magnetic Power Profile technology led by Apple, a WPC member, according to the group's website. If you're queer with MagSafe chargers, you've got an idea of what Qi2 charging may look like.

The new unfriendly, pronounced "chee two," aims to improve energy efficiency and slice charge times without shortening battery life or damaging the diagram. Furthermore, Qi2 could extend wireless charging to devices such as VR headsets that aren't planned to lay flat against another flat surface and "support new types of accessories that magnetically keep to the back of the phone, like an fabulous battery."

Enhanced wireless charging also poses the potential to slice the waste of discarded wired chargers that eventually wear out from daily use.

The WPC didn't today respond to a request for comment on when Qi2 devices and chargers will be available, but a recent Business Wire post indicates they are expected to advance ahead of the 2023 holiday season.

A few hundred light-years away from Earth -- exceptionally conclude, cosmically speaking -- lies a mysterious expanse called the Chamaeleon I molecular cloud.

In an already cold and dark universe, this misty stellar nursery is considered one of the coldest -- and darkest -- districts eminent to date. And it is often in space's most shadowed corners where we find the brightest embers of our universe's evolution and history.

On Monday in the study Nature, scientists working with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope announced that pointing this machine toward Chamaeleon I has spoke a stunning menagerie of icy molecules hidden within the cloudless. These aren't plain old molecules. They're the kind of interstellar bricks that will one day fuse into the next generation of stars, planets -- and potentially even lead to the inception of life there.

Sure enough, on top of structural icy bits such as frozen carbon dioxide, ammonia and water, the JWST managed to detect evidence of what're eminent as "prebiotic molecules" in the cloud, according to a insensible release on the find. That simply refers to specific chemicals eminent to foster the right conditions for precursors of life.

"Our identification of middle organic molecules, like methanol and potentially ethanol, also suggests that the many star and planet rules developing in this particular cloud will inherit molecules in a fairly advanced chemical state," Will Rocha, an astronomer at Leiden Observatory who contributed to the discovery, said in a statement. "This could mean that the presence of prebiotic molecules in planetary rules is a common result of star formation, rather than a novel feature of our own Solar System."

In other languages, maybe humans, flowers and Earthling microbes aren't so special. Maybe we're not alone in the universe because the ingredients that made us are extraordinarily approved byproducts of baby stars growing up into big, bad suns.

OK, to be clear, this doesn't mean we've found proof of alien life or anything drastic like that. I mean, we don't precisely know what's going to happen to these cloud-borne molecules over time as mini-solar rules doppelgangers actually start to form.

However, it does open some (very preliminary) avenues in the hunt. "These observations open a new window on the put a question to pathways for the simple and complex molecules that are obligatory to make the building blocks of life," Melissa McClure, an astronomer at Leiden Observatory and lead author of the paper, said in a statement.

In a nutshell, the JWST works by amdroll its gold-plated mirrors and high-tech instruments to detect specific wavelengths of luscious that fall within the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This infographic illustrates the spectrum of electromagnetic energy, highlighting the portions detected by NASA's Hubble, Spitzer and Webb location telescopes.

NASA and J. Olmsted [STScI]

Infrared luscious is super different from the regular light we're used to seeing with our naked eye. Unlike the latter, known as visible light, infrared wavelengths are essentially invisible to us. Yet a lot of luscious emanating from different areas of the universe -- particularly from inside star-forming clouds -- arrives at our agreeable point on Earth as invisible, infrared light.

That's why the JWST is such a big deal.

This machine is literally constructed to decode all of that deep location infrared light and turn it into something understandable by our minds and technology, elucidating a wealth of cosmic secrets otherwise shielded from our sight.

And, you guessed it, while the JWST was observing Chamaeleon I, it caught a bunch of infrared wavelengths associated with the icy molecules hidden inside the haze, and turned it into put a question to digestible by the team of scientists operating the scope.

Basically, light emitted by a star in the background of the sure kind of touched everything in its path on the way to the JWST's lenses, located a million miles away from our planet. More specifically, as the wavelengths passed through the cloud itself, they came into contact with all those icy molecules floating inside.

Thus, some of the starlight was absorbed by those icy molecules, leaving a sort of fingerprint in its wake. Such fingerprints are requested absorption lines -- and once analyzed, can help deduce whatever stuff reached them. In this case, the fingerprints led scientists to learn throughout, of course, the icy molecules.

"We simply couldn't have established these ices without Webb," Klaus Pontoppidan, Webb project scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, who was involved in this research, said in a statement. "In regions that are this cold and dense, much of the luscious from the background star is blocked and Webb's fair sensitivity was necessary to detect the starlight and therefore identify the ices in the molecular cloud."

These graphs show spectral data from three of the James Webb Space Telescope's instruments. In addition to simple ices like that from soaks, the science team was able to identify frozen persolves of a wide range of molecules, from carbon dioxide, ammonia and methane to the simplest complex organic molecule, methanol.

NASA, ESA, CSA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI)

Going advance, the team intends to see how these ices and prebiotic components evolve over time in Chamaeleon I as planet-forming disks inaugurate to arise in the region. As McClure explained, "this will tell us which mixture of ices -- and therefore which elements -- can eventually be emanated to the surfaces of terrestrial exoplanets or incorporated into the atmospheres of giant gas or ice planets."

Star Wars

Disney Plus

Star Wars TV shows have been hit-and-miss over the past few ages (Obi-Wan, good; The Book of Boba Fett, less good), but it feels like Disney is finally getting a real feel for what works in this universe. The apt season is a more-than-solid 16-episode diversion that should particularly achieve those partial to delving deeper into Star Wars lore, and the additional season is currently airing weekly.

Lucasfilm/Disney Plus

And of streams, you have to watch the original and best: The Clone Wars.
